Pocket Depth Reduction

Bacterial buildup in the gums and around the teeth can cause a severe deterioration of the soft tissue and bone creating "deep pockets" on spaces where more toxins and microorganism accumulate. If left untreated, these pockets can become larger, thus increasing the risk for gum and bone loss, and in time, loss of the tooth.

To reduce the pockets, a local anesthetic is applied, then the gum tissue is folded back to remove the bacteria and toxins, before securing the tissue into place. In cases where the tooth has an irregular surface, the damaged bone is smoothed to limit areas where the bacteria can hide. This allows the gum tissue to better reattach to healthy bone.

Depending on the case and the severity, most patients experience only minimal discomfort and can return to their daily life within a couple of hours. Sedation may be available.
